Midsummer Ensemble looks back and ahead
The Midsummer Ensemble’s 2025 concerts are already behind us. The programme of “Hymns of Joy!” featured festive works by Handel, Bach, Corelli and Dvořák. We performed Johann Sebastian Bach’s festive Magnificat, which celebrates the joy of the pregnant Mary. The programme also included the Dettingen Te Deum, an exuberant victory hymn that Händel wrote after the British triumph at the Battle of Dettingen. This was complemented by Corelli’s Concerto Grosso in G minor, written for one of the festive highlights of the church year: Christmas. Finally, in Dvořák’s Serenade for Winds, the wind players demonstrated that the styles of the Baroque and Classical eras can be combined with the Romantic idiom.
We look back on successful concerts in which we were able to convey the festivity and richness of the music to a large audience. At the same time, we’re already looking ahead. 2026 marks the 25th edition of the Midsummer Ensemble, and we’re celebrating with especially grand concerts on Friday 28 August, Saturday 29 August and Sunday 30 August 2026. Keep an eye on this website for more information!
About the Midsummer Ensemble
The Midsummer Ensemble is the sunniest ensemble in Amsterdam and has been under the inspiring leadership of Jeroen Spitteler since its founding. Each year, choir and orchestra rehearse a challenging, appealing programme in a short time. Classics such as Mozart’s Requiem, Bach’s ‘Missa’ from the Hohe Messe (BWV 232) and Rossini’s Petite messe solennelle have all been performed, but the ensemble also enjoys sinking its teeth into more modern works, such as Pärt’s Litany and Poulenc’s moving Stabat Mater.
